The chief executive officer and other key leaders play a central role in nonprofit management. These leaders are responsible for guiding strategy, managing operations, and serving as the public face of the organization.

Transitions in the mission-driven sector carry a particular weight. When the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director of a social sector organization steps down, they are not just leaving a role. They are passing on relationships, history, and a sense of purpose that others will carry forward. Done well, this moment can be a powerful act of stewardship. 

Although we can’t completely rewire our brains to remove our biases, we can use Core Competencies to challenge these biases and keep us grounded in factors we genuinely need to weigh during a search process – and that’s great news.

In recent years, pay transparency has moved from taboo to debate, and now, increasingly, to standard practice. Part of that shift is being driven by state laws—15 states now require some level of pay transparency. But especially in the mission-driven sector, the very human need for clarity, fairness, and trust makes pay transparency a values and compliance consideration.

Quickly into my time here at NPAG, I observed that the nonprofit organizations who were most in need of transition support didn’t have the resources to partner with us or any external consultants.  We would often hear from a nonprofit in desperation after they have attempted to conduct an executive search on their own, using a tremendous amount of internal staff time and resources.  I started to wonder what tools and resources are available to nonprofits in times of leadership transition.  Outside of search firms, who else is in this ecosystem of leadership transition work? Who is funding nonprofit organizations who are most in need of transition support?
